I was abuzz, I flung open my emails to brace myself for dazzling reviews to shine back in my face - but oh how naive I was.
Someone wrote in (amidst many positive emails) about my live show in front of two hundred plus people.
Mind due It was the first time I had spent a pretty penny on ads, marketing and production that my eyes watered looking at the invoice.
The spicy email criticised that the smoke machine, lights and razzle dazzle was all to much for this one precious women.
I immediately hear Spirit say to me "You could part the sea and they'd complain their feet got wet Cael".
It was my first lesson in "You can not please absolutely every body in this world".
It's an important lesson for budding Platform Psychics and it's something to learn and accept very quickly.
Although I was met with praise and lovely feedback, 1% of the audience (1-2) people said they didn't like it.
One said the intermission was too long, mind due it was twenty minutes which is a standard in live entertainment and something that you can't negotiate with venues about.
They also didn't like that I talked about myself and my gift and wanted me to just fill every possible second with readings and readings only.
It's honestly impossible to please every body. So the first lesson in platform Psychic ability is to quickly realise that you can't accomodate or bend your unique presentation to mitigate criticism.
Lesson #1: Realise Criticism, then pay no mind to it.
Another key practice of successful platform psychics is embracing and enhancing their psychic persona.
This involves fully committing to the 'role' by dressing the part, incorporating elements like purple colors, and utilizing props such as smoke machines and mystical music.
A lot of Psychics try to dodge that light and it's to their own demise. Humans are simple creatures. We need to associate with things quickly. If you want your audience to open up to you quickly, you'll dress the part.
A doctor should wear a lab coat, a magician a top hat and tuxedo, a chef in a white coat and hat and a Psychic in mystical attire, candles, smoke machines, and crystal balls.
The issue is to think it's cheesy. It's only cheesy because you think it is. It's really what people expect.
By doing so, psychics create an immersive atmosphere that helps the audience relax and prepare mentally for the experience. This approach taps into a psychological effect where the ambience primes the audience to accept and engage with the performance more readily.
Just with the visual cue, it makes you credible and believable.
Rather than shying away from the "psychic" label or attempting to modernize it in a vague way, leaning into the traditional elements and adding personal flair not only enriches the experience but also reinforces the connection between the performer and the audience.
Lesson #2: Play, dress and BE the part.
The start of anything is the most crucial element of any show.
It's true that first impressions matter and it's always important to start with a memorable opening.
One way you might want to start is with an origin story.
The origin story is your ticket to authenticity and, thus, likability with the audience.
This is the golden nugget to have the audience your best friend right away.
Tell your origin story to the audience in your own way with your own flair.
Start by writing it out in dot points several times. Play around with it starting from perhaps a childhood experience in Psychic ability (if possible) or even when you took your gift seriously.
Write it out step by step, and then (if you're not naturally funny) have AI rewrite it or add some humorous flair.
Humour and storytelling are a public speakers most crucial weapons in their arsenal to kill boredom, ambivalence and instill trust and openeness.
When you've written on the origin story, practice it again and again just simply with dot points. Listen to yourself tell your origin story.
and finally, when you deliver it from the stage, don't skip parts or think it's not necessary. People won't know you. They are curious, and origin stories truly set the stage to begin an evening in your aura and gift.
when you set a clear beginning to the show, you set up a structure that can be easily mapped and followed.
Lesson #3: Create a Strong beginning.
In Conclusion:
It's not all just about the type, quality and style of your readings. Notice how I didn't give any tips on preparation or tactics for readings, It's actually not even in your gift at all that your show will have a memorable or successful DNA to it.
It's about a lot of these other things that are important before we even get to doing the readings that mean a big deal.
A talented accurate Psychic will be forgotten. It's actually not so uncommon these days to have pretty good Psychics.
People experience "excellent" every day. You have to be "Incredible", and you'll achieve this not within peddling your gift from the stage, but leaning into performative elements. Dressing the part is like oiling the pan before you pan-sear, practicing a compelling and intriguing origin story will open the toughest and coldest audiences like a clam and carrying yourself in a strong way without internalising criticism will mean you will swing from show to show like a playful chimp on monkey bars and not give two thoughts to dead words.
